Raya Islands

The Raya Islands, also known as Racha Islands, are twin islands off the southeastern coast of Phuket, known for their crystal clear blue waters. The islands are called Racha Yai and Racha Noi (or Raya Yai and Raya Noi). Underwater visibility can be as good as 30 meters, which is particularly amazing. This also explains the popularity of these islands amongst snorkelers and divers alike. See more here.

Raya Islands

The Raya Islands, also known as Racha Islands, are twin islands off the southeastern coast of Phuket, known for their crystal clear blue waters.
They are situated about 17 km south-southwest from Phuket in the Andaman Sea. Racha Yai is closest to Phuket, with Racha Noi about 10 km further south.
The island names are sometimes written and pronounced as ‘Raya’ or ‘Racha’. Both Raya and Racha means ‘king’. The word ‘yai’ means ‘big’ and ‘noi’ is Thai for ‘small’.
The islands are famous amongst scuba divers and snorkelers alike. There is a plethora of snorkeling diving sites area around both Racha Noi and Racha Yai island. Some say it has some of the best snorkeling and diving sites in Thailand. Underwater visibility can be as as good as 30m.
Racha Yai has a fantastic beach on its north-western side, where the sand is particularly fine in grit and pure white in color. For this reason many people compare the beach sand to soft talcum powder. The island is mostly inhabited by Muslim fishermen and farmers. However there are all levels of accommodation, from bungalows to a five star resort known as The Racha. Several restaurants are also located in Sunset Bay (Ao Tawan Tok).
Racha Noi on the other hand is not inhabited. It has rather more rocks than beaches, which is the result of centuries of coral reef build-up. However, the water is usually crystal clear and numerous snorkeling and diving sites are located here. Racha Noi is also a favorite fishing spot.

Mai Thon Island

Mai Thon Island (also called Maiton Island) is a relatively small but beautiful tropical island, only about 16 km off the southeast coast of Phuket. This is about a third of the distance from Phuket to Phi Phi Island.
At its widest point, Koh Mai Thon is about 2.5 km across. It is adourned with palm trees and pure white sandy beaches. The island itself is privately owned but boats can stop nearby for a swim or snorkel.
It is quite common to see dolphins on the surface while travelling by boat in this area. The dolphins love playing in the bow wave created by boats.
