Surin islands

The Surin Islands are a continental archipelago in the Andaman Sea and consists of five islands, covering an area greater than 320 km². The islands are part of the Mu Koh Surin National Park and is located 55 km from the west coast of the Thai mainland and just over 180 km north-northeast from Phuket as the crow flies.
The Surin Island group includes the picturesque island of Koh Tachai (technically one of the Similan Islands), as well as the famous dive site known as Richelieu Rock. This solitary limestone pinnacle was named after admiral Andreas Richelieu, who was the first (and only foreign) commander-in-chief of the Thai Navy.
Richelieu Rock starts at a depth of around 30 to 35 m at the bottom and has its peak just below the sea surface at low tide. It is famous for sightings of large pelagics like Whale Sharks and Manta Rays and is rated as one of the ten best dive spots in the world.
The Surin island group is one of Thailand’s true gems and one of its most beautiful island locations. There are two main islands, Koh Surin Nua and Koh Surin Tai. (“Nua” is Thai for ‘north’ while “Tai” means ‘south’). These two islands make up the majority of the land mass and are separated by a 200 m long channel that usually dries up during low tide.
A further three significantly smaller islands are scattered around: Koh Khai (or Koh Torinla), Koh Glang (or Koh Pachumba), and Koh Chi (or Koh Satok). There are also two rocky islets known as Hin Kong and Hin Rap and collectively it forms a protective fringing reef. (“Hin” is Thai for ‘rock’).
The tastefully designed head office of the Marine Park is situated on North Surin island and it blends in beautifully with the surrounding landscape. There is a camp site and a few bungalows for visitors that wish to stay overnight.
The Surin islands are inhabited by a small community of the ethnic Moken or Morgan minority (translated from Thai as ‘sea people’ or ‘sea gypsies’). The Moken population of the Surin Island averages around 150 to 330 persons.
There are three distinct tribes of Moken people and they live on the Andaman Coast of Myanmar and Thailand: the Moken of the Mergui archipelago, the Moklen of Phang Nga Province, and the Urak Lawoi living in Phuket province and further south to Satun province. They are a peaceful people with no history of conflict with their mainland neighbors and their respective languages (Moken, Moklen, Urak Lawoi) are uinque, as is their culture and lifestyle.
The Moken proper have a long history of nomadic living and survival in the Mergui archipelago between Myanmar and the islands of Thailand’s North Andaman coast. As nomads of the sea, they would typically live most of their lives in a ‘kabang’, a traditional houseboat, moving from bay to bay depending on the wind and weather. The last traditional kabang was built in 2006 and an in 2018 an initiative was started to try and revive the tradition.
The Moken people have no written language; their history and traditions are passed on by word of mouth. This tradition helped them to survive the devastating tsunami of 2004, which completely wiped out the villages on Koh Surin Nuea and Koh Surin Tai. Apparently when the Moken villagers saw the unusual receding of the sea from the beaches, they knew a tsunami was approaching because their ancestors had warned about this danger in the legend of the giant wave, or ‘laboon’.
According to the legend, the laboon usually comes as series of waves. Since they knew the mass of water receding very quickly was unusual, and since the incoming white wave occurred without being stirred up by any wind or other sign of change in the sky, they knew that it was definitely a sign of laboon. As a result, the entire population escaped to the safety of higher grounds and those who were at sea, turned their boats and headed away from the shore, to the relative safety of the open sea.
Unfortunately however, their houses and all their other belongings were completely destroyed and only half of their boats survived the catastrophic tsunami. The community has since reconstructed a single village called Ao Bon Yai in Koh Surin Tai.
Family connections of the Moken people are reliable and strong, and their language has no native words for individual possession, which perfectly reflects the giving and sharing nature of their culture. The Moken people have no religion, apart from ancestor worshipping. Their tribal tradition is that the deceased are buried below the house of their family, alongside sea shells and other ritualistic offerings.
The Moken people exhibit great respect and an intimate understanding of their natural resources and the environment. In their past as nomads of the sea, the Moken people were subsistence hunter-gatherers who traded fish, shells and sea cucumbers for rice and other food or essentials. The Moken are known to use 83 plant species for food, 33 species for medicinal purposes, 53 species for the construction of boats, huts and tools, and 54 plant species for other purposes.
The Surin islands are incredibly beautiful and no visit to the south of Thailand would be complete without coming here. It is virtually impossible not to be amazed by the scenery and you will return with breathtaking photos and lifelong memories.
