Similan Islands

The Similan Island group is part of the Mu Koh Similan National Park and consists of 11 islands. The park the park originally consisted of nine islands, hence the name “Similan”, which means ‘nine’. However in 1998 the Thai Department of National Parks (DNP) authorities decided to expand the park by adding the two slightly more remote islands of Koh Tachai and Koh Bon to its territory.

The Similan Islands Park is the most beautiful and therefore also the most visited Thai national park. This popularity means increased Tourist volume, which had resulted in increased regulation to preserve the park and its natural resources. For example, the park is closed every year from mid-May to mid-October, so tourists cannot visit. Additionally since 2018, the maximum number of tourists that can visit the park is capped at 3,850 per day; previously as many as 6 to 7 thousand tourists visited the park per day.

Furthermore, to protect the turtle hatching areas on Island No.1, and to conserve the reef and give it chance to regenerate, authorities have closed Similan Islands 1, 2, and 3 to the public. Read more about Similan Islands in the LOCATION/DESTINATION section below (or click here).

Similan Islands

Thailand’s famous Similan islands in the Andaman Sea are located about 70 km off the west coast of Phang Nga province and around 120 km from Phuket. The archipelago consists of 11 islands and covers an area of 140 km² of which only 26 km² is not ocean. It was established as Thailand’s third National Park in 1982 and named Mu Koh Similan National Park.
The park usually opens for tourism from 15th October to 15th May every year and remains closed the rest of the year. There is also a maximum limit of 3,325 people allowed to enter the national park every day. The ideal time to visit Similan Islands is from the winter season of December through to the hot season of April, since then the waters are clear and calm, which makes for the best scuba diving and snorkeling.
The nearest well-known towns are Khao Lak on the Thai mainland and the island of Phuket to the south. The nearest pier is Thap-Lamu Pier, about 20 km south of Khao Lak.
The name “Similan” means ‘nine’ and comes from the Yawi language, which is a Malayan dialect. The park originally consisted of nine islands which were duly numbered 1 to 9 but this was expanded in 1998 to include the two slightly more remote islands of Koh Tachai and Koh Bon (“Koh” or “Ko” is the Thai word for ‘island’).
Naturally, each of the islands in the Similan Islands archipelago has its own name, but it is common to see them being referred to by island number. The islands are:
No.1 Koh Hu Yong
No.2 Koh Payang
No.3 Koh Payan
No.4 Koh Miang
No.5 Koh Ha
No.6 Koh Payu
No.7 Koh Hin Pousar
No.8 Koh Similan
No.9 Koh Bangu
No.10 Koh Bon (also known as Ko Talu)
No.11 Koh Tachai
The Similan Islands are widely considered to be one of the best scuba diving and snorkeling sites in the world. It boasts a very rich marine eco-system, including abundant species of soft and hard corals, sea turtles, rays, moray eels, whale sharks, crystal clear waters and pristine white beaches. Whale sharks and manta rays are not seen very often, however they do occasionally show up, usually around March or April.
One of the most characteristic features of the Similan Islands is the huge rock formations, both on land and under water. The bigger islands of Ko Miang and Ko Similan contain a large range of tropical trees such as ironwood, gum, jackfruit and bamboo, often in thick forests. The Similan Islands also have a large variety of birds, including sea eagles, kingfishers and Nicobar pigeons.
The Similan Islands are truly stunning and a ‘must see’ destination that should be on everyone’s bucket-list. It is virtually impossible not to be amazed by the scenery and you will return with breathtaking photos and memories.
