What is an ATV?
ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) are motorized vehicles that were designed to be used on dirt roads or generally off-road, specifically not on paved roads or highways. They usually have four wheels on two axles with large balloon-style tires. The rider or driver typically sits on a seat located in the middle between the two axles and steers the vehicle by motorbike-style handlebars.
Is an Quad and an ATV the same?
While most people use the terms interchangeably, they are not always the same. To this end, a Quad can be an ATV however an ATV is not necessarily a Quad.
In essence, it comes down to the number of wheels that each vehicle has. A Quad is a vehicle with four wheels, as dictated by the name. An ATV can also have four wheels, however it can also have only two wheels, or as many as six wheels. Whilst a quad is a vehicle with four wheels, an ATV, although it can have four wheels can also only have two, or up to six wheels. Therefore the term ATV basically is broader and encompasses more types of vehicles than a Quad.
