Naka Yai Island is a small island located approximately 6 kilometers northeast of Phuket. It is about 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) long and less than a kilometer wide at its widest point. Naka Yai Island boasts stunning white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters.
The island is sparsely inhabited; there are a few local fishing communities and some resorts. One of the most distinguishing features of Naka Yai Island is its lush coconut groves and scenic views of Phang Nga Bay.
Rang Yai Island, located off Phuket’s eastern coast, is a serene paradise boasting pristine beaches and lush landscapes. Accessible by boat, this tranquil haven offers an escape from the bustling mainland. With its soft white sands, clear waters, and swaying palm trees, Rang Yai invites visitors to relax, swim, and snorkeling. The island also features restaurants serving fresh seafood, making it an ideal day trip destination. Its tranquil ambiance and natural beauty attract travelers seeking a peaceful retreat amidst the stunning vistas of the Andaman Sea.
Monkey Island (also known as Koh Payu) is located north of Naka Yai Island and close to the Mangrove Forest. It is a relatively small island known for its lush greenery and serene environment. It boasts clear waters and beautiful sandy beaches, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and beach activities. Koh Payu offers good snorkeling opportunities with clear waters and a variety of marine life. The coral reefs around the island are vibrant and home to many colorful fish. The island is uninhabited, which adds to its charm as a peaceful getaway. As the name suggests, one of the distinguishing features of Koh Payu is the presence of monkeys, which are often seen by visitors.
Coconut Island also known as Koh Maphrao is one of Phuket’s smaller islands, situated approximately two kilometers away from the east coast of Phuket. As the name suggests, a large portion of the island is occupied by a coconut plantation. It has three beautiful white sandy beaches and a stunning limestone coastline. The island is inhabited but remains very peaceful and quiet, with fishing and farming being the two main occupations on the island. It is a popular destination for scrambling adventures and its thick tropical forest is great for hiking and mountain biking.
Ao Por, also called Ao Po, is not actually an island but a secluded bay located on the northeastern coast of Phuket in the Pa Klok area. Ao Por is home to the Ao Por Grand Marina, which is a modern, 230 berth marina that can accommodate luxury super yachts of up to 499 Tons. It is a popular starting point for island-hopping adventures. The waters around Ao Por are clear, and the area is known for its scenic beauty. However, it is more famous for its marina and boating activities rather than beaches.
The Mangrove Forest along the east coast of Phuket stretches from Cape Panwa in the south up to Saphan Hin and Koh Siray in the middle, and further north to Baan Bang Rong and Baan Ao Kung. These forests are characterized by dense thickets of salt-tolerant trees with complex root systems that grow into the muddy soil. They are also crucial for preventing coastal erosion and protecting against large waves, as demonstrated during the 2004 tsunami. The area is popular with eco-tourism adventures such as kayaking, nature safaris and jet ski tours, making it a popular spot for exploring wildlife and the unique ecosystem. It is uninhabited but is vital for its environmental benefits.
Khai Nai Island, neighboring Khai Nok and Khai Nui near Phuket, Thailand, is a charming retreat celebrated for its serene ambiance and inviting azure waters. This picturesque island, accessible by boat from Phuket, captivates visitors with its powdery white sands and shallow, crystal-clear seas ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Khai Nai’s intimate size offers a secluded escape for beach enthusiasts seeking tranquility. With its array of colorful marine life visible through the transparent waters, this idyllic spot invites travelers to unwind, sunbathe, and explore the mesmerizing underwater world, making it a delightful destination for those seeking coastal serenity in the Andaman Sea.
Coconut Island is known as “Koh Maphrao” in Thai. It is a beautiful island very close to Phuket’s East coast and is relatively small, around two and a half kilometers long by one and a half kilometers wide. It has a very nice beach and a famous seafood restaurant built on stilts. Only around 500 locals inhabit the island.
Khai Nok Island, is a picturesque gem nestled near Phuket. Characterized by its powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters, this small island is a haven for snorkeling and sunbathing enthusiasts. Accessible via a short boat ride from Phuket, Khai Nok boasts vibrant marine life, making it an ideal spot for underwater exploration. Visitors revel in its tranquility, indulging in beach activities or simply basking in the island’s natural beauty. Though petite in size, Khai Nok offers a serene escape from bustling city life, inviting travelers to unwind, snorkel amidst colorful fish, or savor the coastal charm in this idyllic Thai paradise.
Khai Nui Island, situated near Phuket, Thailand, enchants visitors with its pristine shores and captivating marine vistas. This smaller island, adjacent to Khai Nok, allures beachgoers seeking a quieter escape. Renowned for its serene ambiance and crystal-clear waters, Khai Nui invites snorkelers and swimmers to explore its vibrant underwater world teeming with diverse marine life. Accessible via boat trips from Phuket, this tranquil sanctuary captivates with its tranquil setting, providing a secluded paradise for travelers to relax, revel in the natural beauty, and relish the unspoiled coastal scenery amidst the Andaman Sea’s splendor.
Mali Island is a very small and quite unknown island. It is uninhabited and is very close to Phuket. It is situated on the south-east coast of Siray Bay. Departing from AA Marina and traveling south-east, you soon come across Koh Mali, located between the Phuket mainland and Khai Nui island.
Mali island has no beach, which is why it is not well known and is usually only known amongst local fishermen. It is also not marked on most Phuket maps and tourist operations like speedboats, sail boats and jet ski tours usually just travel past the island for sight seeing.
